 modern claw clip

Claw clips are used to accessorize hair.

The millennial trends have brought its way to the gen-z.

These claw clips have now become a teenage attraction.  These clips were first produced toward the tail-end of the 20th century. It was a ripe time for the hair accessories market, from sparkly barrettes and butterfly clips to scrunchies and headbands. These clips were used in the 90’s by our grandmothers and has again entered into the modern trends.

Claw clips emerged in 90’s and now it is making a comeback trend for the Gen-z’s. It’s comeback is possible through the help of Tik-Tok and many influencers/trendsetters such as Emma Chamberlain, Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid, to name a few.

These claw clips comes in different shapes, sizes and colours. For those with longer hair, claw clips of larger sizes work the best. Claw clips are versatile. For this reason, many people are drawn to getting one. They can be dressed up for a more fancy look, but also a laid-back look. Many though have resorted to using them more casually.

Disadvantages are that claws aren’t the most durable hair accessory on the market. Women with curly and thick locks have struggled to find sturdier clips, since most were designed for thinner hair textures. Claw clips might look threatening, but they are more fragile than they appear.

Banana clip:

People with curly hair were unable to use these claw clips thus banana clips were introduced to make it easy for them to handle their hair.

Earlier people used wear wooden hair sticks and hair forks which were cheaper and durable to use. But women with curly hair faced difficulty in handling thus they jumped to banana clips and later claw clips.

Still some women use banana clips and claw clips as they find it more comfortable.

DESIGN:

Its design was inspired by the 1980’s banana clip-  a long double-sided comb that secures the wearer's hair.

Why they are everywhere:

We are in the midst of a years-long feedback loop that is hellbent on resuscitating 1990s and 2000s trends; colloquially, it’s referred to as “Y2K fashion.”

Many other kinds of hair clips were invented in the 20th century. The ones that are more well-known are the elongated hair clip which was invented in 1972 by Marnie Bjornson and the simple bendy clip which works by snapping the clip from a concave to convex position, springing it into a locked position, or opening it. Several of these are seen in the image attached above.

Scrunchies are another hair accessorize which was popular in the 90’s and has again entered the trends. The scrunchie became immensely popular after 80's artists like Janet Jackson, Madonna, Paula Abdul, and others started flaunting it.

Thus claw clips are my go to. I use it in my everyday life as it is comfortable, durable, cheap and gives a classy look. It offers me an excellent alternative to do a formal updo or casually holding the hair at one place for carrying out home chores.
