Evolution Of Spectacles - Love Kumar M (22BDC021)
DAILY OBJECT: SPECTACLES
The object i have chosen which i use regularly is my spectacles. Here i have done a breakdown on the development in the forms of spectacles from past to the present day.
The Romans, who discovered that glass could be used to magnify objects, are much appreciated by those who rely on glasses to view the world in detail. Wealthy Romans hired glassblowers to create glass spheres, which functioned like contemporary magnifying spectacles. The letters and words become readable when compared to little print.
The History Of Eyeglasses From Glass Spheres To Glass Lenses
Over time, glass workers and engineering minds continued to perfect this art, creating thinner and thinner curved glass blocks and lenses. This was no easy feat because, as you can imagine, glass had to be as clear, clean, and smooth as possible to minimize distortion.
. THE READING STONE (1000 AD)
Around 1000 A.D., a glass sphere was developed, but its creator is still unidentified. It was set on top of writing to make it easier to read.
. FIRST WEARABLE EYEGLASSES (1284 AD)
The first pair of wearing eyeglasses was made by Italian inventor D'Armate. He set out to create something to aid people's vision, and he succeeded in doing so.
. REPRESENTATION OF EYEGLASSES (1352 AD)
Tomasso da Modena represented eyeglasses in his artworks. People wearing magnifying spectacles on their noses are seen in his paintings.
. THE FIRST EYEGLASS FRAME TEMPLE (1600 AD)
The first eyeglass frame temple was created by a Spanish craftsman. They looped silk or strings through the frame and over their ears.
. CONCAVE AND CONVEX LENSES (1604 AD)
Johannes Kepler, who provided the first accurate explanation, helped people begin to comprehend the basic concept behind these lenses in the 17th century. The use of glasses to improve vision distances then became common.
. CYLINDRICAL LENSES (1825 AD)
Sir George Airy created cylindrical lenses. Astigmatism was treated using these lenses.
The words "bifocals" and "trifocals" were created and patented by a London-based optician called John Isaac Hawkins. However, some people think that Benjamin Franklin actually created them. Nearsightedness can be improved with bifocals, while vision problems with the close, middle, and far fields can be improved with trifocals.
. INVENTION OF THE FIRST TOLERABLE CONTACT (1887 AD)
The first tolerable and see-through contact lens was developed by German inventor F. E. Muller in 1887.
. FIRST SUCCESFULLY FIT CONTACT LENSES (1888 AD)
In 1887, Adolf Fick used blown glass, a dextrose solution, and afocal scleral contact shells to fit and create the first effective contact lens. This work was released by him in March 1888.
. THE CREATION OF PLASTIC LENSES (1936 AD)
William Feinbloom began producing plastic lenses in 1936 as a result of the development of polymethyl methacrylate.
. SOFT (HYDROGEL) LENSES (1959 AD)
The earliest soft lenses, developed by Otto Wichterle and Drahoslav Lim, laid the foundation for hydrogel lenses. After receiving U.S. approval in 1971, they underwent years of prescription and adaptation.
. MODERN SPECTACLES (2000 AD)
Eyeglasses are widely available nowadays and come in a wide range of colours, styles, forms, and sizes, particularly bifocals and progressives. They will continue to be relevant and durable as long as technology and societal demands demand it.
