 HISTORY OF TELEVISION by DIYA J PATEL 

In 1928, General electric made the first mechanical television that was demonstrated to be displayed in public. The TV was powered rapidly by spinning wheels and this was made as an experiment to air the first TV drama, The Queen’s Messenger. It has 3-inch screen. 

FIRST MECHANICAL TELEVISION 

BAIRD, was the first cathode ray tube television receiver to be sold publicly that was made in England in 1930. It used 30-line scanning disk and measured around 3ft wide and 2 ft high, and also it transmitted first wireless moving image. The play ’The Man with a Flower in his mouth’ was first broadcasted on this device.BAIRD 

EMYVISOR, invented in 1936, was a tv that increased the image by adding magnifying glass to it and making it 8 inch and it also played 25 frames per second. A separate radio needed to be purchased as this television featured a ‘vision only’ station. Only 10 sets of this were made. 

MARCONIMARCONI 

MARCONI, from 1938 was considered compact in that day although it was 2ft long, 1 1/2 ft tall and wide, and weighed around 100lbs. It has 7-inch screen. 

At 1939 World Fair, Radio Corporation of America explained television to American public. Their RCA 630TS was hit after World War 2 in 1946. It weighed around 85lbs and has 10-inch screen and was invented by Philo Farnsworth. 

 

MOTOROLA ‘Golden View’ was considered best and most affordable during 1940s. It came with tabletop and portable cabinet, with 7-inch screen, a cheaper rotary switch that could select up to 8 stations, and a 6 1/2in. permanent magnet speaker. It only weighed about 26lbs. 

First remote control was made in 1950.  

Sharp was the first television that was mass produced. Its wide screen with 14-inch wood frame made it well known.  

PHILCO PREDICTO 

Philco Predicta was well known for its retro/futuristic design in 1950s. It can have 17 inch or 21 inch which can swivel on its tube. Its wide screen was considered as one of its best features. 

Japanese developed first HDTVs in 1981 that weren’t well known at first but it gained a huge success until after. 

FLAT SCREEN TV 

 SONY developed the first flat screen television in 1998 that had built in VCR and DVD player. Screen size was largely increased and improvised. 

In 2007, Flat-Panel TVs became more popular as they were more affordable compared to those made earlier. They were flat and had high resolution. They were more convenient than the earlier version as the earlier one was heavy and took up a lot of space but this flat panel TV is more considerable. 

Then further in 2012, Smart TVs were introduced that connected to internet and had access to multiple apps. It also had 3D features. 

CURVED SCREEN TV 

Curved screen TVs later came in market in 2013, and it was considered more convenient as the screen gave perfect viewing angle when viewed from any spot. It has consistent color contrast and didn’t distort colors. It also included smart remote that had voice and gesture control. 

Nowadays television plays a vital role in our lives. It has become a source of entertainment and we do get a lot of information about the happening around us in the form of news.
