HISTORY OF DESIGN - INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT BY FENISHA THAKKAR
DAILY OBJECT - WATER BOTTLE
Since my childhood, I have been strictly advised to keep myself hydrated as we all should and because I tend to forget drinking enough water. I have this particular sipper of mine that I cannot go anywhere without. Hence I decided to choose a water bottle as my daily object and to check on the history of various design of it and how it has evolved.
The evolution of the product that is a water bottle actually goes way way back to 4000BC.
People at the ancient times used to store water in these huge bottles. They were extremely heavy and need more than one person to carry it.
People in medieval times (around 1070) used to store water in animal hide waterskins. These "water bladders" were used to store wine for knights when in combat.
During the era of 1914-1945 which was the era of WW1 and WW2, soldiers carried bottles or canteens made out of enameled steel. They had a volume of roughly two pints and were easy to carry.

After WW2 around 1947 people started using plastic water bottles. Initially it was very expensive but by 1960s manufacturers started using cheap polyethylene.
Around 1950s the US started mass producing stainless steel water bottles. It was said to be more durable and healthier than plastic and aluminum.
1964 saw the rise of Thermos flasks/water bottle. They made reusable water containers people can use when having lunch. They competed with other manufacturers at the time and clearly has been used by people over the generations and even now they use it.
During 1994, Robert Heiberger and Judy Amabile introduced Polar bottles for cyclists to use easily and efficiently. It was designed in such a way that it could be fit into the cycles.
2018, We have so many advancements and one notable one was the eco friendly water bottles. The bottles are made from repurposed ocean debris that is melted down into small PET pellets.
