HISTORY OF DESIGN: LIPSTICKS
HOW WAS LIPSTICK MADE IN EARLIER DAYS ? The stain of lipstick was procured from natural substances like tar, beeswax, fruits, henna, clay rust and insects. Mesopotamian women were a little on the fancier side and used ground precious jewels to add color and shimmer to their lips. Egyptians derived color from sources such as carmine dye that was derived from grounded cochineal insects.
LIPSTICKS IN 1920s: By 1923, JAMES BRUCE MASON JR. made the swivel up tube and gave us the modern thick lipstick as we know it today. The first wave of feminism came in 1920s only when women demanded more rights to vote. Lipsticks at that time were actually considered a symbol of feminism.LIPSTICKS IN 1930s: 1930 was all about elegant and matte finishes. Max factor started selling lipglosses but it was only reserved for hollywood actresses. Deep plum and burgandy were some of the preferred shades of this era.
LIPSTICKS IN 1940s: Due to the second world war, women took laborious jobs with men at war frontiers, so the materials were scarce, metal tubes for lipstics were temporily replaced with plastic tubes and papers. Women were actually encouraged to wear reddest of the lips to boost the morale during the grim time of the war. BESAME AMERICAN BEAUTY was one of the most popular shades of red.
LIPSTICKS IN 1950s : In this era, QUEEN ELIZABTH II created her own shade during her coronation. The shade was customized by queen's favorite brand CLARIN'S and the 'THE BALMORAL'. The color matched her coronation code. HAZEL BISHOP successfully came up with a kiss-proof lipstick. Soon revlon came up with their smudge proof lipstick and then the war of brands of lipsticks started.
LIPSTICKS IN 1960S-70S: In 1973, BONNIE BELL introduced LIP SMACKERS that is a lipstick with flavors which was famous in young crowd. AERIN'S ROSE BALM LIPSTICK in PRETTY and CORALS like MAYBELLINE'S ORANGE DANGER were the iconic shaded of the era. Lipstick drew inspiration from arts, popular culture and went from the fashion scene.
LIPSTICKS IN 1980S: The concept of power dressing came into being, and BOLD RED LIPS were a statement once again. MATCHING LIP COLOR and OUTFITS was common and in vogue. HOT PINK LIPS became all the rage keeping up with the culture of the era. GOTH LIPS were popular in some alternative subcultures.
LIPSTICKS IN 1990s: In this era, demand for chemical free and natural formulas for lipstick grew. TATTOOED and SEMI-PERMANENT COLOR on the lip was getting popular. DARK LIP LINERS WITH A LIGHTER LIPSTICK was so famous, brands such as MAC, URBAN DECAY came into the scene.
MODERN LIPSTICKS: In early 2000s, things took a subtle turn again with wet-juicy-look lips matching silver lids. Till today, we have seen the rebirth of every salvageable 90s trend such as NUDE LIPS, NATURAL LOOK LIPS, MATTE LIPS, LIQUID FORMULAS that take the effort out of application, helping you achieve a subtle or not so subtle overline.
PSYCHOLOGY BEHIND LIPSTICKS: The LIPSTICK THEORY is the theory that when facing an economic crisis, consumers will be more willing to buy less costly luxury goods. The underlying ASSUMPTION is that the consumers will buy luxury goods even there is a crisis.
